Treehouses

Tree House InteriorTree-houses can be a romantic fascination for children and adults alike. We have an innate physiological bond with trees that may very well stem from a genetic memory of our ancestors reliance on these living giants. Psychologists have shown that we are drawn to trees that are climbable and provide good opportunity for broad surveillance, probably based on early survival needs. “The idea of building a small refuge in the trees seems to be one that man has entertained since the beginning of his existence……In certain cultures of the South Pacific, entire populations once lived among the trees……Records also document observation bridges in Japan, luxurious platforms in Persia and classical Rome, and a popularized version of the tree house in Victorian-era Britain” (From TreeHouses by Alejandro Bahamon, 2007). Tree houses come in all styles from an eclectic structure pieced together with found materials to a refined architectural design built by professional craftsman. Many people think of tree houses a place for children to explore, exercise and imagine. But today, tree houses are being built as home offices, guest rooms and even entire living spaces.

Treehouse on stiltsThere are a variety of tree house types. One option is to build a structure around a tree truck. This is generally the sturdiest form and by its nature the design will revolve around the trunk. Another common option is to build between some of a tree’s branches. This requires the right specie of tree with thick, sturdy and horizontally growing branch types. A tree house can also be built on top of the trunk, Perhaps a tree was damaged by nature leaving a sturdy tall trunk as an opportunity to build. Tree houses can also be built between two or more trees, which allows for larger and more dynamic spaces. The tree house could also be suspended by wires between several trees . Though the suspended structure is the most difficult to build and access, it does provide the greatest views of the surrounding. Finally, a tree house can be built beside a tree. Though it may not be structurally connected to a tree, if it is built in relationship to a tree or forest it is a tree house. Tree house designs can be based on any combination of the above types.

Bucks County Tree HouseThe access is one of the first tree house features a visitor will encounter. It can be anything from a rope ladder to a full staircase with railings. If the tree house is a simple open platform, the other main feature will be the railings. Railings need to comply with codes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with style and character. For an enclosed tree house, ‘windows’ will be a crucial feature since looking out and over the landscape is a primary purpose of the tree house. Some tree houses are enclosed to the degree that traditional glass windows are used, while other more open enclosures will use unique cut outs to frame special views. If the tree house is built around multiple trees, bridges can be a fun feature giving the sense of floating in the trees, plus they provide excellent viewing spots. Trap doors, dumbwaiters, hammocks, lighting, heat are all potential tree house features to consider.
